Travel Advice and Advisories

The Travel Advice and Advisories (TAAs) are the Government of Canada’s official source of destination-specific travel information. They provide travel advice and recommendations about safety and security conditions abroad to enable travellers to make their own informed decisions when they are outside Canada.

The Travel Advice and Advisories pages offer country-specific information for over 230 destinations on:

  • regional risk levels
  • local safety and security conditions
  • entry and exit requirements, including visa requirements
  • possible health hazards and health restrictions, including any necessary or recommended vaccines
  • local laws and culture
  • updates on environmental concerns, such as natural disasters
  • where to find help while travelling outside Canada
Risk levels

There are four possible risk levels based on the country’s specific security situation. The decision to issue, remove, upgrade or downgrade an advisory is made in consultation with the embassy, high commission or consulate of Canada responsible for the destination, as well as with stakeholders from various divisions at Global Affairs Canada.

They are:

Exercise normal security precautions: Take similar precautions to those you would take in Canada.

Exercise a high degree of caution: There are certain safety and security concerns or the situation could change quickly. Be very cautious at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Avoid non-essential travel (Advisory): You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.

Avoid all travel (Advisory): Your personal safety and security are at great risk. If you are already there, you should think about leaving if it is safe to do so.

Note: There are separate risk levels for health-related concerns. More information on health risks can be found in the Health section of the Travel Advice and Advisories page for each destination.

Local conditions may change at any time so travellers should check the Travel Advice and Advisories twice: once when planning a trip, and again shortly before departure.

While away, travellers can stay up to date on changes to their destination's travel advice by subscribing to website updates or following us on social media. You will find more information in the “How to reach us and stay connected” section.

Destination-specific travel advice can help answer many of your client's questions.
