Suzanne Elliot - Transcript

I would like you to tell me how a day goes by. What is a typical day for you?

There is no such thing as a typical day at work for me. A day could start at 2 am, with a call, the police called an embassy abroad because children were found abandoned. And we will help.

And they call you?

They will call the emergency centre, yes. And they could call me, and because I'm the Deputy Director, they wake me up. And it’s with great pleasure that I accept the responsibility. But what happens is that my team arrives in the morning and we will catch up with our embassies, our high commissions, our missions abroad, on the cases we have at the moment. To hear about any developments that happened during the night.

Ok, so you do this every day?

Every day. That shows us the agenda for the day. An hour ago, we were called because there a child was abandoned in Mexico. Immediately, we need to find safety for that child. So with a lot of respect and empathy, we try to get through that and treat all our clients equally. We do not judge the situation – we are there to provide consular services. Honestly, I feel lucky every day to be where I am.
